Barcelona-based Wuaki.tv has beaten Netflix to the Italian market, where it has rolled out its VOD service with content from both US studios and local content providers.
In addition to its studio deals with Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Sony and NBC Universal, Wuaki.tv has signed distribution agreements with Italy’s BIM Distribuzione, Leone Film Group and CG Entertainment.
The service can be accessed via PC, laptop, Microsoft game consoles, smartphone (iOS/Android), Google Chromecast and smart TV sets from LG, Samsung and Panasonic.
Owned by Japanese ecommerce giant Rakuten, Wuaki.tv has already launched in Spain, the UK, France and Germany. The company, which aims to be operating in 15 European countries by the end of 2015, claims more than 2 million viewers in Europe, including 1.4 million in Spain and 400,000 in the UK.
The company is planning to launch in Ireland and Austria in the coming months.
