Hong Kong-based regional streaming service Viu is collaborating with Warner Bros International Television Production on a Bahasa-language remake of Pretty Little Liars.

Produced by Viu in Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which are Bahasa-speaking countries, the series will be streamed simultaneously across all Viu markets later this year.

Filmed entirely in Bali, the remake follows the original in the concept of four high school students whose group falls apart when their leader goes missing. When the girls are reunited, they start receiving messages from a mysterious figure who threatens to expose their darkest secrets.

Directed by Indonesian filmmaker Emil Heradi (The Night Bus, Sagarmatha), the series stars Anya Geraldine, Eyka Farhana, Valerie Thomas, Shindy Huang and Yuki Kato.

The original series ran for seven seasons on ABC Family/Freeform in the US. Viu also recently adapted Endemol Shine’s The Bridge, originally, into a version set between Singapore and Malaysia.

PCCW Media Group managing director Janice Lee said in a statement that Pretty Little Liars resonated with younger viewers, “with similar profiles to our Viu audience”.

“In line with our strategy to invest in creating content assets, in 2019 we will have a mix of Viu Original productions and will work with international partners on local adaptations that resonate with audiences in Asia,” Lee said.
