Netflix has released the trailer for documentary Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang, directed by Kevin Macdonald.
Produced by Wendi Murdoch, Fisher Stevens and Hugo Shong and executive produced by Bennett Miller, the film examines the work of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang whose “frequent use of gunpowder serves as an ancestral homage and an acknowledgement of the fleeting nature of humanity,” according to Netflix publicity materials.
That basically means lots of jaw-dropping controlled explosions and gravity-defying installations. Among his many insane experiments, Cai built a 1,650-foot ladder of fire climbing into the skies above his hometown, hence the name of the documentary.
Netflix acquired the film at Sundance. It will have a European premiere at the London Film Festival on October 7 and stream on Netflix from October 14.
