Japan’s Niconico has announced that the first episode of anime series Sailor Moon Crystal has been viewed more than one million times with around 250,000 comments in just two days.

Niconico started streaming the series last weekend in 12 countries, with the Japanese stream alone pulling in around 140,000 viewers. The Japanese platform will post the second episode on July 19.

A reboot of Naoko Takeuchi’s ‘90s anime Sailor Moon, the series revolves around a clumsy blonde teenager who discovers she is the reincarnation of a female warrior. The original series was a worldwide hit in the ‘90s and has retained a loyal global fanbase.

Kotono Mitsuishi has returned to voice the lead character in the new series. The anime also features the voices of Hisako Kanemoto as Sailor Mercury, Rina Satou as Sailor Mars, Ami Koshimizu as Sailor Jupiter and Shizuka Itou as Sailor Venus.

Crystal Sailor Moon is also streaming on Crunchyroll and through the Neon Alley channel on Hulu. Produced by Toei, the 26-episode series will stream worldwide twice a month for one year.

Niconico, previously known as Nico Nico Douga (literal translation: Smiling Videos) is a video-sharing website owned by Japanese telecoms and media company Dwango.
