Netflix has released a trailer for its live action version of the popular Japanese manga Death Note.
Scheduled to stream on August 25, the film is directed by Adam Wingard (Blair Witch) and stars Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars), Keith Stanfield (Atlanta) and Willem Dafoe.
Wolff plays a character called Light Turner who discovers that everyone named in a supernatural notebook is destined to die. He sets about using the notebook to kill anyone who he feels deserves it, all the time being watched by a ‘shinigami’ or death spirit, played by Dafoe.
In Japan, the manga has been adapted into an anime series, video games and series of movies, starring Japanese idol Tatsuya Fujiwara.
As with Paramount’s adaptation of Ghost In The Shell, Netflix’s Death Note reboot has run into criticism for white-washing, as all the original Japanese characters are being played by white actors.
