Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology has announced the first four projects to receive matching funds through the pilot scheme of a new initiative to support international co-productions with Indonesia.
The four projects are: Mouly Surya’s This City Is A Battlefield, Tumpal Tampubolon’s Crocodile Tears, Garin Nugroho’s Samsara and Loeloe Hendra’s Tale Of The Land (more details below).
Indonesia’s Film Matchfund, which has an annual budget of $13m, aims to match the funds that Indonesian filmmakers have managed to secure from a range of eligible international funding agenices. These international funds include France’s Aide aux Cinemas du Monde, Berlin film festival’s World Cinema Fund, Rotterdam film festival’s Hubert Bals Fund, Norway’s Sørfond and Singapore’s IMDA, among others.
Announced at Indonesia Night during the Cannes Film Festival (May 20), the four selected projects have raised international funds amounting to Euros1.38m. Indonesia’s matching fund is provided with the support of the country’s Cultural Endowment Fund, established in 2022.
“We hope that this fund will not only support Indonesian filmmakers in manifesting their creative ideas, but will have an impact on expanding international networks and increasing the capacity of Indonesian filmmakers to the world standards, various transfers of expertise, then in the long run they will produce films about Indonesia’s diversity for the world,” said Hilmar Farid, Director General of Culture under Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
“At the Spotlight Asia event at the Cannes 2024 Market yesterday, many foreign parties expressed interest to collaborate with Indonesian producers due to interest in this matching fund,” said Alex Sihar, Special Staff to the Director General of Culture.
