Jeff Sagansky and Florence Sloane of Goldenpeak Productions and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment are teaming with digital aggregator FilmKaravan on a Mumbai-based outfit that will produce content for India’s booming OTT space.

The new venture, Golden Karavan, will create and finance a slate of original TV content over the next five years, aimed at Indian streaming platforms including Netflix India and Amazon Prime Video India.

Initial projects include a collaboration with Indian indie filmmaker Hansal Mehta to adapt Ashwin Sanghi’s best-selling book The Sialkot Saga, as well as with award-winning Canadian-Indian director Richie Mehta on an as-yet-untitled drama series.

An active media investor who has taken several companies public including India’s Videocon d2h, Sagansky is a former president of CBS Entertainment and former co-president of Sony Pictures Television. Kaplan (pictured), a renowned TV producer, has partnered with CBS to co-finance Kapital projects.

US and India-based aggregator FilmKaravan, founded by Apoorva Bakshi, Pooja Kohli and Sanjay Bachani, also operates India’s first digital-focused production house, FilmKaravan Originals.

“Given the access to broadband that is transforming the Indian media landscape, the timing is ideal to launch Golden Karavan, a studio that will provide provocative and high-end, Indian-themed content,” said Sagansky.

Kaplan added: “We recognise the opportunity to focus on the underserved Southeast Asian market with amazing storytellers and talent, both in front of and behind the camera, and we couldn’t have stronger partners leading the creative than we do with Apoorva, Pooja and Sanjay.”

Netflix, Amazon and local streaming platforms such as Hotstar have been pouring investment into original Indian content over the past year. Earlier this week, Amazon announced that it is launching six new comedy series with Indian comedians including Anuvab Pal, Biswa Kalyan Rath and Sumukhi Suresh.
