Palo Alto-based VR producer Jaunt Inc has launched a China joint venture with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and China Media Capital (CMC).
Already operational, Jaunt China is filming and producing VR content aimed at a global audience across genres including travel, adventure, narrative, music and sports.
Initial programming includes a VR version of reality show, The Voice Of China, virtual tours of Shanghai and music from Chinese band SNH48.
Jaunt China is using the company’s Jaunt ONE camera, designed specifically for VR creators, before processing the content through cloud-based rendering pipeline, Jaunt Cloud Services (JCS), which runs on Amazon Web Services in China for rendering and processing.
In addition to the Chinese joint venture, SMG is also investing in Jaunt’s US operation, which recently partnered with Paul McCartney on a six-part documentary series and produced original content for Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame Tour.
CMC invested in Jaunt last year in a $65m funding round that also involved Walt Disney Co and Evolution Media.
