IMAX has struck a deal with HBO to show episodes from its popular fantasy drama series Games Of Thrones in 150 US theatres later this month.
Two episodes from the show’s fourth season, along with an exclusive trailer for season five, will be screened across the US from January 23 to 29. The episodes are being digitally remastered to fit the IMAX format. The fifth season of Game Of Thrones premieres in April.
It’s believed that two of the most cinematic episodes from season four – The Watchers On The Wall and The Children – have been selected for the screenings.
IMAX didn’t announce how much the tickets will cost but said they will be available on its website in coming weeks.
“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said HBO chief marketing officer Pamela Levine. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”
“IMAX always seeks innovative ways to provide moviegoers a unique and differentiated experience and today’s partnership with HBO and Game Of Thrones achieves just that,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “This deal also furthers our efforts to offer exhibitors the opportunity to participate in alternative forms of content in a new and exciting way.”
IMAX also showed its appetite for innovative content late last year when it signed a deal with Netflix and The Weinstein Company to give the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel a theatrical outing simultaneously with SVOD.
