HBO Asia is co-producing survival thriller The Head with Hulu Japan and Spain’s The MediaPro Studio.
Set in the Polaris VI international polar station in Antarctica during the winter months, the six-part series follows a group of scientists from different countries who find themselves cut off from the outside world. Directed by Jorge Dorado (The Pier), the series has dialogues in English and Danish.
The series was shot in a 2,000-square metre studio in Tenerife, Spain, where the purpose-built set of the Polaris VI research station was reproduced to actual scale, based on information about the layout and operation of this type of scientific facility. The crew also filmed exteriors in Iceland.
The Head’s international cast include Tomohisa Yamashita (Code Blue), John Lynch (The Terror), Katherine O’Donnelly (Mary Queen Of Scots), Alexandre Willaume (Tomb Raider), Laura Bach (Sprinter Galore) and Sandra Andreis (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo).
The series is scheduled to premiere on June 12 at 9pm on HBO GO and HBO.
Hulu Japan was originally launched in September 2011 by US streaming platform Hulu and acquired in April 2014 by Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV.
The MediaPro Studio is the content arm of Spanish content production and distribution group, MediaPro, which has an international footprint with 58 offices across four continents.
