UK-based streaming platform FilmDoo has acquired TVOD rights to 19 Asian films from distributors including Hong Kong-based Asian Shadows and Japan’s Stardust Pictures.
Asian Shadows titles bought by FilmDoo include Indonesian filmmaker Eddie Cahyono’s Siti; Korea-Germany co-production Cancelled Faces, directed by Lior Shamriz; and two films from Chinese filmmakers – Liu Shu’s Lotus and Wang Bing’s Three Sisters.
Siti, about a young mother forced to work in an illegal karaoke bar, won the Asian New Talent Award for best screenplay at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2015. Wang Bing’s documentary Three Sisters won best film in Venice Film Festival’s Orrizonti section in 2012.
Titles acquired from Stardust Pictures include Tatsushi Ohmori’s The Ravine Of Goodbye; Kentaro Horikirizono’s Black Dawn; Hajime Hashimoto’s Princess Sakura: Forbidden Pleasures; and Yûichi Onuma’s Schoolgirl Complex.
The Ravine Of Goodbye, about the murder of a child, which brings to light an affair between her mother and a neighbour, won the Special Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2013.
FilmDoo has also acquired titles from Daehan Drama, Objectifs, Lights On and De Warrenne Pictures (see full list of titles below). All titles were acquired on a non-exclusive TVOD basis and are already streaming on FilmDoo’s platform.
“There are so many great, interesting stories coming out of Asia; so many talented emerging filmmakers coming from this part of the world,” said FilmDoo co-founder Weerada Sucharitkul. “We’re excited to be doing more to showcase this talent and give these unforgettable, diverse films the exposure they deserve.”
