BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the UK broadcaster, has signed a distribution pact with direct-to-home provider (DTH) Tata Sky, marking its first VOD deal in India.

Tata Sky, which operates both SVOD and TVOD services, will offer subscribers in eight Indian cities a range of BBC dramas and comedies via branded property ‘BBC On-Demand’. The BCC service will also be available through PCs, tablets and mobiles.

Titles included in the deal include Luther, starring Idris Elba; The Honourable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal; and Burton And Taylor, starring Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter.

“In a study commissioned by BBC Worldwide earlier this year, we found that quality of content, British humour and a love of original British dramas were the top reasons why people, including Indians, enjoy British television programmes,” said Myleeta Aga, senior vice president and general manager of BBC Worldwide in India.
