Netflix has announced a revenge thriller film Thar, starring Anil Kapoor and produced by his production outfit Anil Kapoor Film Company (AKFC).
Expected to start streaming this summer, the film is written and directed by Raj Singh Choudhary, an actor known for films including Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday and Gulaal.
Inspired by Western noir genres, the film is set in the 1980s and revolves around a man who moves to Pushkar, Rajasthan, for a job and sets out to avenge his past. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor plays the protagonist and, in addition to Anil Kapoor, the cast also includes Fatima Sana Shaikh and Satish Kaushik.
Kapoor and Anand Tucker previously produced the series Selection Day, based on Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, for Netflix. He also starred with Kashyap in Netflix film AK vs AK, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, a meta horror thriller that skewered Bollywood fan culture and nepotism. Kashyap has contributed to the dialogues of Thar.
Talking about about his new project, Kapoor said: “On screen we see the fresh pairing of Harshvarrdhan Kapoor and Fatima Sana Sheikh and off-screen we see director Raj Singh Choudhary creating magic with a team of ambitious, risk-taking debutantes – director of photography Shreya Dev Dube and music composer Ajay Jayanthi.”
AFKC has also previously produced films such as Gandhi, My Father, Khoobsurat and Veere Di Wedding and series including the Hindi adaptation of 24, which aired on Viacom18’s general entertainment network Colors.
