Amazon Prime Video has teamed with Indian telco Bharti Airtel to introduce a mobile-only plan in India, marking the first such plan launched by the streamer anywhere in the world.

As part of the ‘Prime Video Mobile Edition’ launch in India, all Airtel customers with bundled pre-paid packs can access a 30-day free trial by signing up to Amazon from an Airtel app using their mobile number.

After the free trial, Airtel customers can choose between an introductory offer of $1.20 (Rs 89) for 28 days of access, along with 6GB data, or choose a $4 (Rs299) pack for 28 days access, along with unlimited calls and 1.5 GB data per day.

Customers who want multi-user access across all devices, along with other Prime benefits, can choose between a 30-day $1.79 (Rs131) recharge or $4.8 (Rs349) pack with 28-day validity, unlimited calls and 2GB of data per day.

Gaurav Gandhi, director and country general manager, Amazon Prime Video India, said: “Over the last 4 years, Prime Video has become the country’s most loved premium streaming service with viewership coming from over 4,300 towns and cities. We believe that the Mobile Edition plan will further accelerate Prime Video’s adoption in India and allow an even larger number of customers to access our popular entertainment content.”

As in many countries in South and Southeast Asia, the smartphone is the preferred screen for consuming online entertainment in India. Netflix also launched a cheaper, mobile-only plan in India in July 2019, which it followed with similar plans in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.
