Amazon Prime Video India has licensed megastar Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Theri, starring Vijay and Amy Jackson, from Kalaipuli S Thanu’s Chennai-based production house V Creations.
The two films have earned a combined $75m (Rs5bn) in worldwide box office receipts. Amazon has exclusive SVOD rights to the two films, marking the first time that blockbuster Tamil films will be available on a streaming platform at almost the same time as their satellite TV premiere.
Also starring Winston Chao and Radhika Apte, Kabali is a revenge story about a revolutionary seeking justice after he was falsely accused and thrown behind bars.
Theri follows an honest copy whose family is slaughtered by a politician and his aides. He decides to change his identity and bring up his daughter in a serene atmosphere. But when events compromise his identity, he tries to save his daughter and avenge the death of his family.
“Southern cinema and star-driven Tamil films have emerged as among the most successful Indian content in the last decade, finding both national reach and viewers. We are certain that our Prime members will love the inclusion of these smashing titles in our selection within a few weeks from their theatrical release,” said Amazon Prime Video India director and country head Nitesh Kripalani.
