India’s ALT Balaji is teaming with Endemol Shine India on its first digital series, which is set to star Wayward Pines and Homeland actress Nimrat Kaur.
The as-yet-untitled series will be produced by Endemol Shine and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, whose last film Dhanak premiered at Berlin film festival in 2015.
Before working in US television, Kaur made her name in Indian indie dramas such as The Lunchbox and Peddlers. She also starred in 2016 Hindi hit film Airlift alongside Akshay Kumar.
Based on an idea from Balaji Telefilms founder Ekta Kapoor and Samar Khan, the youth-focused series will be set against the backdrop of the Indian Army. “When we announced the launch of ALT Balaji, we promised to break stereotypes in storytelling; this series is a strong reinforcement of that commitment,” said Kapoor.
ALT Balaji CEO Nachiket Pantvaidya said: “Through ALT Balaji, we are targeting urban audiences who are always on the lookout for differentiated content that is not available on television or even on the silver screen.”
A wholly-owned subsidiary of Balaji Telefilms, ALT Balaji aims to produce cutting-edge, digital-first content and is also gearing up to launch a streaming platform.
Balaji Telefilms recently announced that it will be pulling back from Hindi film production, and appears to be reaching out to youth audiences through digital content instead.
